Relocating Skate Park Considered By Recreation Committee

MORE PARKING NEEDED AT VOLANTA

A proposal to relocate the city's only skate board park to make way for more parking at Volanta Park was one of the issues discussed during a recent recreation board meeting ... concerning its next "five year plan."

Recreation director White suggested room may available for a new one at Founders Park, on Twin Beech Road.

When asked about it later, mayor Sullivan said she had reservations: "This has only been mentioned and not sure I like the idea. It would take permission from the State to move. I do not like the location mentioned at Founder’s."

The recreation committee is only for advisory purposes; the city council sets spending priorities.

(The skate park was completed in 2010 using a state ADECA grant and other local funds.)

As one that lives close to the existing park, it is a true eyesore- lots of graffiti and a hangout for folks not skateboarding.
The liability insurance the city carries must be expensive. Let’s put that money somewhere else and let a private company run a skateboard park.
Adding those additional ball fields have created quite the mess on Greeno and including the old folks’ home, will be a mess on Volanta.
It’s time for another ball park/rec center complex, why not on the City property next to Walmart?

Can we move it to Pensacola?

It has always been kinda lame anyway. Hope they build a nicer one for the kids.

Almost zero kids skate board anymore, but I do see many a golf cart riding by.

The above comments are ignorant. At least the kids are outside, instead of in front of a TV playing video games.

Not just outside, but creating art through graffiti and litter!

I skate this park all the time and I will say. It is pretty bad. The location is bad too with the trees and pine straw making it pretty dirty. You can make a much better skatepark in the new location. And size doesn’t matter. It would also steer away the skaters from going downtown to skate because downtown is nicer than the skatepark.
