Still No Fix For Dangerous Intersection

Fairhope, Alabama

Greeno Road.

FUNDING NEEDED

For the third year the city did not receive requested state grant funding for a traffic signal at the tricky Volanta/Greeno Road intersection where a big retirement community is about to open.

A traffic study by The Reserve retirement project developers indicated that a signal is not warranted there yet but many citizens and city leaders disagree. The study only indicated a need for a new turning lane.

Mayor Sullivan told the Times "something else" may need to happen there instead.

Making left turns from Volanta onto Greeno is especially problematic due to a concrete median barrier.

Every intersection is dangerous, but if we put any more lights along Green0, N/S traffic will go from bad to worse. Lights' are sequenced do badly that one often hits every red light from 32 to 64 at 5:30 in the morning. The ridiculous light at Van, which is not even a through street (hits Terry Thompson), frequently stops early morning traffic every day when no E/W traffic is present. Wastes gas and time, creates more pollution, and demonstrates the incompetence and/or indifference of our city/county/state planners.

All 26 traffic signals on US 98 are "adaptive", timing controlled/adjusted by ALDOT from a central location in Mobile to change according to traffic conditions. This was a project installed about seven years ago by the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization and state government.

Just like the weather

It is only dangerous if drivers are paying attention to the traffic. And stop texting, put the phone down.

we need some bad ass cops around here to crack down!

Why isn't the City requiring the developers (aka those that are making the big bucks from the development) to shoulder whatever costs are necessary to either install a light or access lane or whatever may be required? It seems that our government prefers to put the onus upon the city taxpayers and let the developers skate.

As we said in the post, the engineer's traffic study indicated no signal is warranted there at this time; they did agree to install a new turning lane though (right turn from Greeno).

We added a form to report problems with the adaptive signals on US 98, at the bottom of the post. https://www.easternshorempo.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/US-98-Complaint-Form-1.pdf

I agree with most of these posts. Sorry it might back up traffic on Greeno but we did not make the decision to build 400+ units at this intersection. Between residents (yes, 80 year olds drive), medical and delivery staff, visitors, etc., there will be plenty of traffic going SB and attempting to go NB on Greeno- a serious accident in inevitable.
Meantime, traffic on arterial roads like my neighborhood will increase and further impact our quality of life.
I hope some serious consideration is made for a light, access lane, or whatever….

The adaptive signals on 98 are working well despite what the local crazies say. Now put some on Hwy 181 too.

Definite ought to be no left terns.

Yes, the adaptive tech is so advanced that drivers cannot even tell when it's working well. Just this morning, it adaptively stopped traffic on Greeno for zero cars at Rock Creek Parkway, zero cars on Van Avenue, and zero cars on Van Buren Street.

The "adaptive", timing controlled/adjusted by ALDOT is horrible on Hwy 59 between Foley and Gulf Shores. The turn lane signals will let one car go at a time.
