ALDOT: No Funds For More Hwy 181 Widening

Fairhope, Alabama

 Highway 181 in east Fairhope.

THIRD PHASE IS DOWN  TO CR 32

Alabama Department of Transportation SW region chief engineer Matt Eriksen told the Eastern Shore MPO's policy board recently that a previously-done  "corridor study" for the Highway 181 4-lane widening project in east Fairhope "all the way from Hwy 104 to US 98" will have to be redone -- due to the "changes and growth in that area." (Those changes previously had been called "urbanization.")

Eriksen said they were working with the FHA, Federal Highway Administration, "... to come up with funding (for the study) ... a lot of surveying goes into it."

Once the corridor study is complete, he said, "then move forward acquiring right of way ... utility construction/relocation" ... when funding is secured.

He added "a lot of work" still needs to be done just on Phase 3 of the project alone, from Hwy 104 south to CR 32.

(A representative from the FHA present said there may be some "extra" federal funding available for the study at least.)

Use the lottery to build roads!

Yea, lottery! That's a great regressive tax, and the always squeaky-clean gambling interests just don't get enough say in Alabama. We can also put some "temporary" tolls up to pay for the new roads. Illinois had such great success with the "temporary" tolls implemented in 1953 that they never went away!

70 "temporary" years of tollways, and counting!

Illinois had the same great success with their lottery, eventually stopping payments on all winnings over $600. Budget problems, you know.

If you don't know which side is right in these debates, just look at the states from which people flee to live here. The questions have been answered. Alabama should not invite such corruption, dysfunction, and irresponsibility to Montgomery.

It will sure be fun to watch the folks “merge” from the two lanes to one lane there by CR 48- 181.
Also wondering just how it’s going to work with all the extra traffic from development going down 13, south of 104. It just reinforces that they have created a huge mess that will be difficult to crawl out of- at least for many years.

The Westbound traffic on 104 could use a longer right turn lane.

This widening project has been known for years. When all this growth has been going on was this not considered that this was in the near future? This County needs to try and do some planning for the future. We vote on these people to serve but they are not doing or even thinking about doing what is best for the cities and county. It is like no brains are required to do the job.
