Magnolia Avenue Utilities Going Underground

Fairhope, Alabama

300 block Magnolia Ave.

 CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

Unsightly overhead electric utilities along Magnolia Avenue between Church and Bancroft Streets where new buildings are being constructed are being buried underground by private contractors U Tech Construction and Hi Line Engineering.

Underground electric utilities are more reliable during storms as well.

Total cost to city should be around $800K.

Here comes another utility rate increase

Exactly...another rate increase. There have been overhead utilities there for almost 100 years but now they are unsightly. And I would have to assume that the city can't stop there and will be doing the same for other areas of downtown. Where is the cost benefit analysis of this decision?

already done elsewhere downtown. this is the last street.

Underground utilities always work best, especially in a downtown setting. Hopefully the City will expand this to the Fruit and Nut neighborhood next. It's a little investment but helps a lot during hurricane season. Keep up the great work Mayor and Council!

Bancroft stil has some that need to be burryed too.

Actually there are still utility/telephone poles throughout the downtown area. It would be a huge investment so would be good to understand the benefits. It should be a business decision and not an arbitrary council one on when/where to do this type of work.

Not sure how much an investment it would be. It is interesting how At&T and CSPIRE came into Fairhope and within a few months buried fiber optic conduit and cables underground throughout downtown, the Fruit and Nut and Bluffs. Seem like it was a fairly easy project. Just take one street at a time and bury the power. Maybe do this when they pave a street. This would save the city electrical department a lot of effort after a hurricane when they have to fix downed power lines. All new subdivisions have underground power.

Multiply $800K times several other streets and it quickly becomes “significant “
