SACRED GROUND?

Objections have emerged, along with a petition (click) opposing the locating of a Fitness Court at the base of the bluff near the rose garden/fountain.

Fairhope resident Anne Brandt spoke to the city council about it during 'public participation' at the end of the March 21 council meeting.

Brandt described such a court as  "not appropriate for the city's town square."

"The design of the fitness court is in conflict with intended purpose of what Fairhope's iconic, historic, and featured location is supposed to be. A very peaceful place where hundreds of visitors come to watch the daily sunset show ... ."

She said she circulated a petition in person during the last Makers Market held monthly in the adjacent south park area -- and got 50 signatures, then decided to establish an online petition as well.

Respondents liked the idea of the fitness court ... but not its proposed location on "sacred ground": other locations like Stimpson Field where existing exercise equipment has fallen into disrepair would be better.

COUNCILMAN CONYERS AGREES

After she spoke, Councilman Conyers said he had had change of heart and thought the council should look at other places for the fitness court.

The city council purchased the property during its November 28 meeting from the Single Tax Corporation for $287K. A fitness court had been mentioned as a possible use for the property at the time because it likely would be used more there, according to councilmen Burrell and Martin (vs. other locations).

Stimpson Field was referred to as a location as well, when the council approved applying for a grant at the July 2023 council meeting for the Fitness Court equipment itself (click).

At some point in the future the city council will have to take a vote to construct the court, at the location of its choosing.

I have always thought that this was one of the worst ideas our City Council has ever announced. I won't list the multitude of reasons that this will not be a good look for the City. I hope that Jay Robinson & common sense prevail.

Why not put it at community park across from the k-1? Get lot of use there.

Any thing is better than the eye sore shack there now!

Just forget th whole dumb idea

Hopefully the council will remember they are elected officials and should do what is best for Fairhope. Stimpson
Field would be a much better location.

Must we copycat every thing that Daphne does

Seems like a good place for it to me. People walk there.

Couldn't they at least put a roof over it?

Compliments to Anne Brandt for the way she has gone about giving input to the council. She gave a nice presentation to the council and Councilman Conyers spoke in favor of Stimpson/Mike Ford Tennis Center. The fitness court is approved for that location already. I think it will see a lot of use af that location and fits in perfectly.

Interesting how many projects get started and built and not maintained. The city has been buying parks, buildings left used with cost of insurance and maintenance, yet no use in the building.Well over 500k for the clock park, the clock itself, and the other stupid one at the 104.The city being way over budget should curtail ANY extra spending, until they can provide all city services, police fire and emergency. It is way obvious that the mindset of the previous administration still parlays to the city wishes itself rather than the council, mayor and tax corp(now non profit?)

Don't we have sufficient space for the preeners in town--local and tourist?

How about an amenity for all ages, classes, and sartorial snugnesses?

If we cannot find the right fit, more parking sure wouldn't hurt.

The pier area is a great place for the fitness facility because everyone comes down there to walk and run on the path by the bay. If you put it at Stimpson Field it will never be used. Not sure why Conyers got scared and changed his mind. I think Conyers and the Mayor should actually take a walk down by the pier and the bay pathway in the morning, evening and weekends and you will see that there are many runners and active people using the path. Put it down by the bay where Burrell and Martin wants it. By the way, the Bayfront park by the boat launch looks horrible. Maybe the Mayor and Conyers should actually go there and take a look.

Went to pier after dark in summer. It was all youth playing boomer music while the odor of Marijane wafted thru the air. Not one officer drove thru entire time I was there. You put outdoor fitness center there. Will become a drug/graffiti venue. This area needs to be supervised or you are going to see it transformed into narco heaven.

What about a police station there?

Whoever proposed this please vote them out. Plenty of other places in this town where this would work. The pier is not a sports complex.
