Tunnel Construction Still On Track

Fairhope, Alabama

Veterans Drive tunnel.

COMPLETED THIS MONTH?

Construction of the new 135' pedestrian/bike trail tunnel under Veterans Drive is proceeding on schedule and should be completed later this month or early next (weather dependent).

The tunnel will connect trails on western and eastern halves of the new Flying Creek Nature Preserve Park -- located between Scenic Hwy 98 and Greeno Road; construction of the western side is already underway -- and final design of the east just started.

The tunnel itself is sloped slightly to the east, to allow for drainage into the existing round storm drain pictured.

Area wildlife are expected to use it as well.

I’m really enjoying having Veterans‘ Drive closed off from the Main Street and Section Street intersection. Just leave it closed and scrap the traffic circle.

Right on! No more improvements or repairs. Just keep everything open until everything lies in ruin. Very brilliant idea, indeed.

I agree with the writer that said keep Veterans’ closed. It was nice walking on it yesterday. With a traffic circle, wondering how bikers/pedestrians will be able to cross SB on to Section from Veterans. Elevated pathways made have made more sense.

Closing any street is a bad idea. Just forces all the traffic somewhere else. Mayb we need more tunnels.

It will be interesting to see how the drainage culvert and the tunnel work out together.

Yep, never close a street. If left alone, all streets regenerate into wider new streets, and even re-stripe themselves. Same with old buildings downtown. For example, if we just wait a little longer, the hardware store will spontaneously transform itself into a building that looks exactly as it did when you were younger, no matter when or what it was. There's magic all around us, except in our elected leaders: they don't believe in magic. Big meanies!
