Garbage Collection Fees Going Up

Fairhope, Alabama

 NOVEMBER 1ST

The city council enacted a new ordinance increasing residential garbage collection fees by $3 effective November 1st; and another $2 in a year.

Commercial garbage collection increases were enacted as well (along with pick-up changes).

The city's Sanitation Fund has been operating at a $1 million deficit for some time now and the increases are meant to make it more self-sufficient.

Transfers from the general fund have always been necessary to balance it (using tax revenue).

Tax & spend & spend

It wouldn't be so bad IF they pick up like they should. Constantly having to call for them to come back.

Yes to Anonymous. That’s what taxes are for. To pick up your garbage. Just fork over the extra few bucks and chill.

ought to break even at least

Not sure we need residential garbage pick up 2 times a week. 1 time a week would probably be sufficient for most people. Could save wear and tear on the trucks. Something to study possibly.

This is not a tax. It is a fee for a service.

Fairhope makes a lot of profit on fee’s for service

So maybe the city should look at doing what they did in Walton County FL. Before I right the rest of this I want to say I am tired of everything going up in Fairhope because the services haven’t been able to catch up to the growth and the real property owners in town are already way beyond the single tax!!!! So back to my original thought! Walton County added a 1 cent tax on every dollar spent to pay for once week trash. Within the first 5 years that penny paid for all new equipment upgrades to the landfill, and had a surplus! If the city would just quit spending money on study after study and engineers that honestly do the something we pay a city engineer to review once it is done then think of some of the savings that could be made! I think the city needs an oversight committee made up of CPA’s to review the budgets and spending that the city does to ensure the citizens of Fairhope their money is being used wisely!!

Totally agree

I know people in many other cities that do only have once a week garbage pickup and that works fine. Be good to see the Council do some work and analyze process improvement opportunities instead of just continuing to raise taxes/fees.

I have heard that we will be going to 1X weekly pickup next year, which is fine with me because we rarely put ours out more than once a week anyway. We recycle and compost, so the volume/quantity of what we throw away is less than average. It always seemed to me that there should have been a different rate for households that only needed pickup once weekly. There are places where households are charged by either the weight or the volume of their trash, which makes sense as long as the base price covers the operations of the system.

Everybody's getting a big recycle can ... same size as garbage ones ... for paper, plastic, cans, etc .... so there will still be twice a week pick up ....

I think we should just all have a burn pit at our residences and burn our own trash and this would solve all the problems

We need a City Manager but the Mayor and Council all appear to be adamantly opposed. They do a great job on most things but they do waste so much money (imho).
