Timed Parking Coming To Pine Street

 2 HR LIMIT SIGN INSTALLED

Mayor Sullivan confirmed a 2-hour parking limit is to be implemented on Pine Street where new angled parking spaces were added recently when it was converted to one-way, per a recent recommendation from the city's Parking Authority board.

When asked about it, Police Chief Hollinghead said more-visible signs will be needed before enforcement may begin.

It is not clear year yet if the city council will have to enact any additional legislation before implementation.  

If successful, such measures could eventually be expanded to other parts of town, according to  parking authority sources.

I like the idea but just wondering if 2 hours is enough...if you walk around town and shop and go to a restaurant, 2 hours goes by fast.

We often spend far more than two hours in town--casually shopping, dining, and enjoying live entertainment. We spend plenty of money (aka sales tax revenue) in the process. If the city goes down this road, we'll be going down another. Either Fairhope is open for business's or it isn't. Don't kill the golden geese. Perhaps, all of the businesses that seek our dollars would happily maintain and report to the city a list of each employee's make/model/tag#, all of which would get stickers identifying them as such. These scores of cars would be required to park in the underutilized parking garage and on more distant streets (e.g. Summit, School). Try it. Collect the data. Reevaluate.

This is a good start. And for the poster above who stated they come into town “to casually shop, dine and enjoy live entertainment,” just park in the free parking garage if you need more than 2 hours. If you’re spending 8 hours “casually shopping, dining and enjoying the free live entertainment” then you probably don’t have a job like the rest of us. So, do us all a favor and park in the garage so those of us who work and come into town on occasion to eat dinner can park in the 2 hr parking space. Thanks...

The two biggest problems with downtown parking is employee taking up many slots and students attending the local college. Eliminate both of these and there will be parking. Another issue are large pickup trucks and SUVs parking on either side of the street reduce the street to one line roadway.

There is ample parking most of the time (other than Arts & Crafts, Tree Lighting & such events). People are just lazy; if someone is coming to 'spend the day', why not park in the Garage so that others that don't have the luxury of time can park on the street? Such entitled attitudes!

We really need to plan and deal with the ongoing and growing parking situation that is not going to be solved with one small fix or another. The Mill which had people coming and going throughout the day is now going to be an event space. So people will be coming all at once for several hours. I doubt events will be held when ample parking is available. People don’t want the hardware store turned into a multi-use business. Fairhope has to keep its charm but also change with times. This just isn’t a historical destination like Colonial Williamsburg. A lot of people are coming here for shopping and dining. That building is a blight on the town. As is the K-1 building which now has plans to be used by a minimum number of people for a purpose that can be done anywhere and shouldn’t be in downtown. That space is most ideal for more parking as it is adjacent to parking already. I understand there are sentimental ties to things but we can’t be bound to buildings by feelings. This parking problem is growing and perhaps there are multiple solutions. The K-1 space for another lot or deck, designated all day parking, limited parking, pay by plate with first two hours free, more one way streets to allow for diagonal parking, etc. There’s lots of ideas and we should implement some of them or even people who live here won’t bother coming into town. And that’s the last thing we want.

Here we go again with the "Fairhope mind readers." The very lengthy post above states that “people don’t want the hardware store turned into a multi-use business.” Really? You have no clue what all 20K “people” in Fairhope want, so please stop making these type of statements. Also, the threat of people not shopping in Fairhope due to the 2 hr parking limit and taking their money elsewhere is probably not going to happen. Where else are these people going to find a walkable downtown with shops, etc. in this area? So, I personally doubt people will pack up and not shop in Fairhope because of the 2 hour parking and/or because they may have to park in the free parking garage.

Really? Your statement to chastise someone else’s comment is helpful? Please note it doesn’t say all people it just says people. And there are more options than 2 hour limits and a free parking garage.I enjoy downtown regardless of where I have to park. But I do know people (to clarify - not all people) who already can’t be bothered.

My biggest issue parking downtown is when I just have a quick trip to run into a business that wouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes and having to park two blocks away to accomplishment this.

I wish we had more of the 'green' labeled spots for 15--20 minute parking and a meter maid to enforce it. I typically walk to town, but there have been times when it's cold or rainy and I don't go buy/do something important because I can't park for 10 minutes. That said, people abuse it and we would need a meter maid to mark tires....perhaps the same person could ferry shoppers to/fro the parking garage?

Hmm, I have two jobs, but I've never considered myself superior as a result. I also have more than two hours to enjoy on many a Saturday downtown, and two-hour parking limits might discourage us from visiting, too. We don't mind parking in the garage, if necessary. Why do you?
