Intersection Finally Gets Funds For Traffic Signal

US 98 at Volanta Avenue.

 GREENO AT VOLANTA

After being turned down the last two years, the city was awarded a $2 million state ATRIP-II grant to install a traffic signal at the hazardous Volanta Avenue/Greeno Road intersection; turning lanes will be added as well.

Total cost is $2.5 million; city's matching share is $508K. 

As a condition for its approval four years ago, the nearby Reserve at Fairhope senior housing complex  agreed to kick-in $100K for the project.

The ATRIP-II program, established by the Rebuild Alabama Act of 2019, allocates a minimum of $30 million annually from the Alabama Department of Transportation's (ALDOT) share of new gas tax revenue for transportation projects of local interest on state-maintained highways.

This is good but City should not have to pay one dime. The housing project and businesses should have had to pay for upgrade. They paid for the utilities being upgraded but not the road. Planning should have to answer for this. Planning always let's stuff like this go and fights with the utilities when they want to charge.

The required traffic study by the senior center developer's engineers found only a right turn lane was warranted there ... not a traffic signal. Hence only $100K is being contributed by them.

Someone should be checking the developer’s engineers. It is a no-brainer that a light needed to go there. It will probably save some of the resident’s lives….

They must have done the study early morning like 3am. because anyone who has been anywhere near that intersection has risk their life taking a left turn there or waited to turn for many minutes.Same situation planning should maybe use someone other than their buddies.

I live near this intersection and have seen problems the few times I’m getting out there. The data is probably years old and would not include the extra volumes going to the rec center, ball fields, and senior home. Thank goodness the city had some common sense.
