New American Legion Crosswalk Approved

Fairhope, Alabama

New crosswalk location.

Design.

ACROSS SOUTH MOBILE AND LAUREL STREETS

The city council appropriated $9K for new crosswalks across busy S. Mobile Street between the old American  Legion Hall and Gambino's restaurant -- and another across Laurel Street to the Elks Club at the stop sign.

Solar-powered flashing pedestrian crossing signs will be installed there as well. An additional section of sidewalk will be constructed on the east side, for connectivity.

The sidewalk will be in a grassy area that people park. The will be issues with the sidewalk being blocked. Maybe just north of Laurel would be better.

Maybe the lazy people should park in the big parking lot a few paces away instead?

I’m accustomed to seeing crosswalks at 90 degrees to each other and connected at the end. I am also cued by the approaching intersection. Can’t see need for the sidewalk displacing them.

Signs do little deter aggressive drivers. Speed limit of 25mph crossing a street should not be issue if properly marked. You want safety put a rubber speed calm hump. Cost hundreds and return several thousand back to community.

Many near accidents at crosswalks. I would lobby for a pedestrian/bike stop crossing light, solar powered. Would also serve to slow traffic on busy street.

They need to get it done before the new Dunkin Donuts opens on the American Legion out lot.

That Dunkin groundbreaking has been delayed, again, probably until late July/early August.
