New Restaurant's Overflow Parking Plan Called Off

Plan called off.

KINGFISHER

The owner of property immediately behind the new Kingfisher restaurant on Scenic Hwy 98 has called off plans for rezoning it -- to be sold and used as an overflow parking lot for the restaurant and other businesses in the area. 

During its April meeting, by a 4-2 vote the planning commission recommended denial in the face of stiff opposition from Nelson Drive neighbors.

The matter was scheduled to be discussed during the last city council meeting, but was pulled from the agenda by the applicant/property owner according to planning director Simmons; it had little support from the council -- according to our informal polling.

The restaurant has been using the nearby former Supper Club property for parking; it burned to the ground over a year ago and is being relocated.

It is not clear yet if any alternative parking plans for the area may be considered later.

This is sad. Its a very unsafe situation currently. This proposed plan had no impact on Nelson drive. So for them to be able to shut it down is absurd. I suspect it's because a certain council member lives on Nelson.

The overflow parking at the old Supper Club looks like a used car lot. Why was the Kingfisher allowed to open with an inadequate parking plan?

Their parking plan meets all standard city specifications for restaurants based on the number of tables/parking spots needed. Once the "newness" wears off, parking will be more than adequate as it was with the previous restaurants there.

Kingfisher won’t slow down. That place has a great fallowing and will only get better. They offer great food at a reasonable price and in a very nice atmosphere. The owner should be applauded for investing so much money to rehab the old structure and save the trees. The City should work anyway the can with the owners because the public will expect that.

If, indeed, the "parking plan meets all standard city specifications," then the problem lies with the city. The fact remains: the current use presents a significant safety issue, and a nuisance.
