Nix Center Space Rental Rates May Be Increased

Fairhope, Alabama

Nix Center
Proposed Nix Center rates 1.

 IN PLACE SINCE 2007

The city council is considering increasing rental rates for the ballroom and card room at the Nix Senior Center on Bayou Drive -- that have been in place since 2007 (see attached documents for proposed new rates).

Fairhope city residents will still get priority for reservations, as well as a reduced rate compared to non-residents. Added fees may apply for after-hours and other special events.

Also, new minimum liability insurance may now be required for some events where tickets are sold or when alcohol is served as well.

Similar increases were made for space rentals at the civic center several months ago.

The new rates could go into effect next month, if the council votes to approve them during an upcoming meeting.

Is this an indicator of budget problems? I think I would raise other programs before those for Seniors.

No. These spaces may be rented by anyone.

maybe they are just trying to discourage certain events ......

A reasonable move, given there have been no increases in the last 18 years and considering the cost for staffing and utilities for after hour events.

Seniors have more money in the bank than anyone, especially in Fairhope. Getting old is not an achievement, does not merit a subsidy from working families. I know: I got old without even trying.

There are many seniors in Fairhope that are not “monied”. For many, the Nix Center is the only social outlet they have. I would look elsewhere for money and maintain a subsidy.

This is for rental of some of the space to outside groups, of any age. Senior fees will not be changed.

That sounds good, as long as senior activities at the Center don’t get squeezed out.

Yes, let’s reward the old farts that just moved here by allowing them city services at a loss.
Can we eliminate all of their expenses?
Let’s really take care of the individuals that failed their entire working lives to plan for their retirement.

So, one size fits all? A family of seven must subsidize pinochle?
