'BAY HILL' INTERSECTION

Earlier this month members of the city's Traffic Committee discussed possible fixes for the tricky Fairhope Avenue /Mobile Street intersection -- leading down the hill to the pier park.

A three way stop, added center striping, yield signs, and rumble strips were among possible fixes mentioned.

The committee decided to recommend asking traffic consultant Neel Schaffer to look at it; a similar study was done there in 2015 -- but never implemented (below). Limiting turns was one recommendation then.

Some intersection improvements were once included in the working waterfront renovation project too, but dropped later (very bottom).

Many drivers do not respect the “uphill traffic has the right of way” signage and turn south in front of oncoming uphill vehicles. Many roll thru the stop sign on Mobile St to turn right on Fairhope Ave. Hand out tickets to violators, increase signage ( maybe flashing). Square off the right turn from Mobile St to Fairhope Ave to prevent rolling stops.

The problem here and many places in Fairhope is Where are the police??? If the police would patrol and do their job then we would not have to mess up all out streets with speed bumps and other things. We have a big problem in Fairhope! Does the Mayor have control over the Police Department in Fairhope ?’ Yes!

The police are stretched to the max with the massive area that they are charged with patrolling. With the increases in population and crime, I don't see how they have the resources to focus on the traffic at slow moving intersections where common sense should prevail. Has there ever been an accident there?

The police are constantly at the area of the elementary school on Fairhope Ave, maybe they could diversify and have one patrol this intersection.

I believe one of the issues with policing is a shortage of officers. Perhaps volunteers could be recruited to drive streets, report problems relative to parking or driving. Really, who wants to be a police officer nowadays?

Whatever happened to the analysis of the Fairhope Ave / Ingleside dangerous intersection? I thought the city paid a consultant to give them options but that was months ago.

Let's not urban plan to the lowest common denominator. The intersection works. Let the ding-dongs work through their limitations, and let us work around them. The last thing we need is more traffic control devices, more absurdly low speed limits, etc.

"Police staffing shortages" and "stretched to the max with all of the crime in the area"?.?.?.?.? Geez.... I wonder how some people navigate life with their head up their posterior.

Our PD has more than enough funding to hire an adequate number of officers.
The problem we have is enforcement.

There are indeed a shortage of officers at Fairhope PD. Facebook has been used for hiring ads. I agree that there is adequate funding, but folks are not beating down the doors to apply. If there was adequate staffing you would see improvements towards enforcement.

It’s a fact that people in Fairhope CAN’T drive. Part of the reason is the high usage of mind-altering prescription drugs here. But other than that, I’m not sure what causes the immense brain damage that happens to drivers here. I watch them roll through stop signs all the time.
There wouldn’t be a big problem at this intersection if people would just come to a complete stop and look BOTH ways before proceeding.
And don’t get me started on how stupid and entitled Fairhope pedestrians are…..
