'FANCY'

One of the city's famous French Quarter cats had to be euthanized today after a short illness; caretakers told the Times 'Fancy' (aka Missy, Shadow, Kitty) stopped eating several weeks ago (taken to vet then) and had actually gone missing for a while, but turned up across the courtyard yesterday in bad shape: very thin, mucus running from eyes and nose (last photo below).

A local business owner took it in last night (Happy Olive) and caregivers to a local vet this morning where it was determined no more could be done. (Monday was a holiday with most businesses closed.)

Numerous stories were written over the years about it and companion Marble who is still there and going strong.

No one knows for sure but speculation is Fancy could have been up to 16 years old; and lived happily greeting fans bearing treats at its bench in the French Quarter for over 10 years.

Tributes are being posted on social media by fans as word spreads; we understand some kind of permanent memorial is being planned for there too.

Monday's final photo.
