CITY'S FIRST SCHOOL BUILDING
Restoration of the Bell Building on the Coastal College Campus in downtown Fairhope has begun.
Constructed in 1904 by the Single Tax Corporation, it was the first city's schoolhouse; in 1908 it became a part of the famous Organic School of Education campus founded by Marietta Johnson.
The Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees approved the $570K project last month; Langan Development Company Llc. was the low bidder.
The building has been used as the Marietta Johnson Museum in recent years; it gets its name from the school bell in the tower on the roof.
The college has leased the property from the city since the mid-1980s.
