ALABAMA NATIONAL GUARD
Crucible Construction has begun a $2 million repair and maintenance project at the Fort Riel Armory at 550 Fairwood Blvd.
The armory has been vacant for over a year; the 690th Chemical Company last-occupied the space.
The 690th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) Company is a unit within the Alabama National Guard, part of the 31st Chemical Brigade, focused on handling hazardous material threats, conducting recon, decontamination, and training with allies, as seen in recent exercises like DEFENDER 25 in North Macedonia. They are crucial for global deterrence and rapid response, performing specialized CBRNE defense missions
No plans for future use have been announced by the Armory Commission of the State of Alabama.
