WEEKS BAY AREA

Contractor McElhenney Construction is extending  the Eastern Shore Walking/Biking Trail along U.S. Hwy 98 east of the Fish River bridge, 1.8 miles to Pleasant View Lane.

Cost is $2.1 million using federal/state transportation grants with local matching funding by the county.

This will be a part of the new Around the Bay Trail if funding is found for it:

"We’re excited to invite you to help shape the future of trails and outdoor connectivity across coastal Alabama. Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) has partnered with Jacksonville State University to lead a feasibility study for the Around the Bay Trail—a proposed project to create a 110-mile multi-use trail loop around Mobile Bay. This trail would connect and expand several popular segments, including the Eastern Shore Trail, Fort Morgan Trail, and the Harper Biking and Hiking Trail, creating a regional amenity that supports recreation, eco-tourism, and stronger community connections.

This effort builds on the momentum of the recently completed Sweet Trails Alabama Statewide Trails Plan, which outlines a bold, long-term vision for trails across the state. You can learn more about the Sweet Trails initiative at: https://sweettrailsalabama.org"

I don’t see a whole lot of folks using the current bike trail now. Seems like a big waste of taxpayers dollars especially if we’re not upgrading infrastructure for traffic. These ridiculous grants should be more discretionary where the true needs are.

This is to be part of the "Around the Bay Trail" planned by the state.

This was started years ago and was to be funded by the state though grants. It continues, yet no bike markings as riders don't use for fear of biking on a side walk but many know it IS a bike path, now lets get it mark ed ,painted somthing SO new arrivals might figure it out. It's supposed to go from US 1 to Spanish fort is I remember correctly.

The Eastern Shore Trail is a connector between North Daphne and South Fairhope. It consists of sidewalks and paving that start at I-10 at the north end, extend down US 98 and Scenic 98 through Daphne, Montrose, Fairhope and Point Clear, and end at Weeks Bay. (repost Bald Co Trailblazers)

We need to enforce state law, which requires bicycles to use trails, not the road, where there's a choice. Instead, the yellow spandex mafia is allowed to impede traffic--claiming rights, ignoring traffic laws.
