WEATHER A FACTOR?
The slow pace of construction of the new Julwin's Plaza is causing mounting concern at city hall, as well as for neighboring businesses there.
Low-bidder R H Deas began construction last April and had 90 days to complete the contract -- but some additional work along Bancroft Street was added recently (relocate memorial pavers for $18K).
No reason for the delay has been mentioned publicly or a new completion timeline; it is hoped before the start of annual holiday events.
The nearby Welcome Center rehabilitation project is behind schedule too now (different contractor).
From an April 2026 FT report:
"Contractor RH Deas Building Company is starting the reconstruction of the plaza on the corner of Fairhope and Bancroft Avenues, designed by Christian Preus Landscape Architect (cost $432K).
Design is similar to nearby Gaston Plaza; the adjacent sidewalk along Bancroft will be reconstructed as well.
No parking spaces will be lost, according to the engineers.
Construction could take up to 3 months."
