New Hospital Tower Construction Starting

New hospital tower.

Construction fences have gone up at the corner of Morphy and Ingleside Avenues where a new four story expansion of Mobile Infirmary's Thomas Hospital is to be constructed.

Overhead electric utility lines on both streets  will have to be relocated or buried as well to make room; relocation cost is to be shared with the city, according to city officials.

 From our February 2024 report:

"Thomas Hospital president Ormond Thompson presented a new plan to add up to fifty rooms adjacent the current emergency room on Morphy Avenue in a rare "informal" joint meeting of the city council, planning commission, and board of adjustments today.

A parking garage would be on the first floor -- and 25 beds on the second initially; the top two floors would be built out over the years as needed.

The new rooms need to be adjacent the existing overcrowded emergency room where the need is greatest currently,  and to various nearby testing equipment as well (x-ray, labs, etc.).

The campus is "landlocked" only way to build is "up" here, he said.

This was the second version of the plan, after changes were made based upon earlier feedback from the city (entrance moved to Morphy side)."

Power lines to be relocated.

It’s my understanding the parking spaces on the first floor would be for about 30 vehicles. Since there is parking there now, I do not see a parking gain.
Wondering why they don’t plow up the “green belt” space that is between the medical offices off Ingleside and put parking spots there. Why not bite the bullet now and do the full complement of beds- guarantee they would fill up soon.
We need that Malbis proposed hospital soon.

Really don't know who designs the expantion but there are better ways of land use.Condition all floors now(finish as needed)as this will fend off future higher building costs, build park garage separate with helio pad on top for air flight.First floor parking may be an issue with EV vehicle fire safety.

Wouldn't it make better financial sense to build the entire medical section and finish upper floors as needed (curtailing future building cost), separate the parking garage and ould place a helo pad on top for life flight. All of this can be done with better design and land use.
