New Location For Skateboard Park Sought

SPACE NEEDED FOR PARKING/EXPANSION

The city's recreation board is asking citizens for suggestions about where to relocate the skateboard park from its current location in Volanta Park, because of necessary expansion of stadium facilities there.

Some possibilities already mentioned include to just east of the current dog park (at Volanta), Founders Park, and the Colony Nature Park -- both on Twin Beech Road.

Any new/different features the skateboard community may like to see included are being solicited too.

The current spot south of the stadium likely will be needed for new stadium locker-room/training space and parking, according to recreation director White.

An updated 5-year plan for recreation is now being developed by the board.

Not too remote. These kids can,t drive cars.

As the picture shows almost never used. Why bother? Bicycle lanes around the city would be better investment.

This one was too lame anyway. Need something more rad!

Every square inch of that park will be asphalt or concrete, just like the city. How about the top deck of downtown parking structure for the new skate park?

How about Daphne? Better yet, Summerdale.

Skateparks are now in most cities, which is amazing. However, like many things, if the park is not designed and built by actual skateboarders, the result is often a design that isn’t enticing or functional. Many cities make this mistake. Companies like Team Pain build skateparks across the globe, and these parks consistently attract skaters and regular use. Huntsville, AL, recently got an incredible new skatepark that was done correctly. After a career in the action sports industry, I hope this insight is helpful.

Wherever its moved too, keep it close to downtown. This is coming from an actual user of the skatepark. It needs to be rebuilt w/ modern, usable obstacles such as varying sizes of ledges (currently they are almost all the same size), multiple rails (round and square), usable quarter pipes (maybe even a half pipe), varying sizes of stairs (right now there is a two stair and then a 5-6 stair, need middle sizes), manual pads of varying sizes, and a usable hip/pyramid (the current one is so large and steep I think its a bike obstacle).
