New Building Planned For Downtown

Fairhope, Alabama

OLD MAGNET THEATER SITE

The Planning and Zoning Commission has approved a site plan for "The Theater Building" -- proposed for the vacant lot at the corner of Fairhope Ave. and Church St. -- where the historic old Magnet Theater building had burned early last year and ultimately had to be demolished.

Two restaurants are planned for the ground floor and the rest is to be retail space, according to Planning Director Johnathan Smith.

The large live oak tree on the southwest corner of the property will be saved, according to Smith.

Smith told the Times he is pleased with the New Orleans style "creole" design of the proposed  building.

Where are all of these people going to park?

Perfectly good parking garage behind the Hampton.

You are correct, its the corner of Fairhope Ave. and Church St., not Magnolia.

If all the people who worked downtown parked in the lots and parking garage, then there would be some downtown parking available.

I work downtown and park in the parking garage because it keeps the temperature in your car down. While I agree the merchants should park in the garage to free up space on the street, what is wrong with anyone parking in the garage and walking 2-3 blocks to get where you need to go?

But where are all the people staying in the extra busy (built for wealthy locals who love Mardi Gras) Hampton Inn going to park??????

The design is awful. Has nothing to do with downtown Fairhope. It looks like it belongs in New Orleans. For the life of me I can not figure out why we continue trying to be something we are not. With each passing day we continue to loss who we truly are. It's heart breaking.

When do they expect to break ground on this project? Thanks.
