Fairhope, Alabama
OLD PET SMART BUILDING
The city is looking into the possibility of purchasing a vacant 45, 000 square foot commercial building on Pecan Ave. for expansion of the public works department. The public works department needs the space to park vehicles and equipment (ie. garbage/trash trucks) out of the weather and for recycling activities. More office space may be needed as the city expands as well.
There is currently limited room for expansion at the city's public works complex on S. Section St.
The asking price for the 6 acre property is about $525,000, down from $800K a few years ago. Mayor Kant told the city council there is enough surplus money in the utility funds to purchase the property outright. Councilman Ford, a realtor by trade, was asked to inspect the building and report findings back to the council.
[Prior to construction of the library in 2007, the city used the old nut processing plant at the corner of Fairhope and Bancroft for the purpose.]
