Mayor Proposes 3% Pay Raise

Fairhope, Alabama

At the August Strategic Planning Committee meeting, Mayor Kant said he is proposing a 3% cost of living adjustment for the city's 280+ employees in his draft 2014 budget.

Councilman Mueller indicated his support for the increase, but the other 3 council members present did not express an opinion at the time.

This year, 2013, employees received a 3% COLA increase;  in 2012 full time employees received a $900 bonus ("one time raise")  instead; no raises were given in 2011 and 2010 as a cost-cutting measure during the height of the Great Recession; and they received  4% in 2009.

The city's various short and long term capital needs, debt reduction, funding requests, etc. were also discussed at the meeting.

Council members are still negotiating details with the mayor.

By majority vote, the city council must approve the final form of the proposed budget by Oct 1st, the beginning of the fiscal year.

(A study done in June of last year found the city had no formal "pay system" at that time -- click)

Let's see, they just got a COLA in 2013, they get a $7500 employee luncheon and now you want to give them another raise? Wow, social security needs to take a lesson from Mr. Kant.

I'm posting this here because I don't know where else to post this. We live in Fairhope in a subdivision. Does anyone know of anything homeowners can do when neighbor(s) allow their home and property to fall into decay? I know that Mobile has an environmental policy where these types of owners can be reported, but I don't think Fairhope has one. These homes in my neighborhood are in the minority, but one in particular is so deplorable that it could distract from the property values of those homes where the owners keep them landscaped and tidy. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give to pursue this. I am not a nosy meddlesome neighbor, but this is so disrespectful to the rest of us!

Our employees work hard. Its often a thankless job since citizens demand more and more from them. They deserve more than 3%.

try saying thanks, for a change.

Was a formalized pay structure ever established by ordinance? If not, that is step one before any wage increases.

I have no problem with the employees who actually work and make this a great city getting a raise. The problem is there are too many supervisors and Mayor's "friends" sitting around doing nothing but collecting a paycheck that give the rest a bad reputation.
