Iconic Coffee Shop Changing Ownership

FIRST COFFEE SHOP OF MODERN ERA

Gene Leighty owner/operator of the popular coffee/ice cream shop on De La Mare Avenue announced he is retiring in July, selling his business to a Spanish Fort couple.

He moved to Fairhope from Florida with his family and opened in a small store on Church Street (outdoor seating only) in 1990,  moved to a bigger space two doors down later in the decade, and then to the present location in 2001.

In the early 90's, his was the only stand-alone coffee shop in town until the 'Coffee Loft' and 'Latte Da' opened several years later; now there are at least seven at last count.

Parents often stopped in for ice cream after picking up their kids from the old K-1 school nearby; sometimes teachers brought whole classes by as well.

Several generations of children remember Leighty as the town's Mr. Rogers; they and some former employees are planning a going away party later this month.

Leightly's own two children are now living in New Mexico.

(The current building at 302 De La Mare is on the historic registry; constructed in 1910, it was a residence for members of one of the city's founding families, the Browns.)

Its the Mayors fault he's selling. Cant the city council pass an ordinance to prevent an out of town buyer!? I mean come on! Spanish Fort carpetbaggers!

Wow , out of town buyers? Really? The mentality of that first statement is laughable. When I moved to Fairhope more than 10,years ago I went to the said coffee shop and paid 5.00 for a coffee that came out of a machine like a convient store. It was a rip off . I never went back. It you can’t produce a quality product the business is not going to be there. Coffee loft on the other hand is worth every penny and their line of customers proves it. Best coffee that I have ever had. You would be surprised at the “out of towners” that live here because guess what we are not on horse back anymore. What a dumb @@@

Why would he sell because of the Mayor? This is absurd. If you are implying that the book store coffee shop has further diluted his business, you should know that competition is good for any business. I am so confused about your comment.

The mayoress shouda done something about it.

Just stop ordering those fancy drinks if they cost to much and get coffee black. I get tired of waiting in line behind you all!

Mayor's fault? Oh come on. The man is ready to retire. Have had many Fairhope Floats there. Can't see where La Te Da or whatever you call it is in competition with him. The man is tired and wants to live out the rest of his life in peace. Give it a break.

It is too not “to” much. The point of my comment is that if you have a business , make sure you are giving people what they are paying for . I can make my own decisions about what I drink whether it be black coffee or “fancy drinks “ but thanks for your concern.

Not closing because of quality, selling because they are retiring and going to enjoy retirement with all the money they made.

Highly doubtful

In response to Fairhope Floats...Right On! Enjoyed many as well. Great memories in this little spot. Editor, nice homage to this gentleman, the business...much of Fairhope’s history packed in this tiny article.....and I remember seeing the kids walking to and from the school. Homage to one of Fairhope’s historical spaces, once home to one of Fairhope’s founders. Mr. Leighty, best to you and yours and thank you for many years of great memories!

Fairhope needs to do more of this. Let people come in that actually care about a business . Some of those old stale antique “junk”stores need to close. There are a few that actually carry antiques but the others are pure junk

After reading this article I had to write a comment because there are a few items that are incorrect. Gene's Beans was originally called Choco Lafe'. It was started by Bryan and Dayna Jones in 1991. It was located on Church street and was the first coffee and chocolate shop in Fairhope. The Fairhope Float was invented at this time. Gene Leighty bought the business in 1993 and eventually moved it to this currant location and changed the name.
