Controversial Golf Course Development Resurfaces

Fairhope, Alabama

Update: After a lengthy discussion on May 4, the planning commission voted to recommend denial of the proposal to rezone and for the PRD site plan. County Commission makes final decision at an upcoming meeting.

DENSITY REDUCED

After being rescheduled from a meeting earlier in the year,  a housing development proposal on 7.2 acres off of Battles Road in Pt. Clear between holes 2 and 3 on the Lakewood Country Club's azalea course is back on the agenda for the Baldwin County Planning Commission's May 4th meeting in Robertsdale.

This time it is in the form of a rezoning and 6-lot Planned Residential Development; Teacher's Retirement Systems of Alabama is owner and Goodwin, Mills and Caywood  the projects' engineer. (Previous plans were for 12, 10, and 7 lots.)

Because of heavy opposition from neighbors (traffic, density, etc.) as well as "health and safety" issues, a similar proposal called 'Watershed West' was rejected by the city of Fairhope's planning commission three years ago when it was in their jurisdiction.

In the interim, neighborhood residents voted to implement a new county planning district, district 19.

Facing the same opposition, a similar subdivision plan for 10-lots was pulled from the county's agenda in January  (click).

Rezoning from current recreational classification is also being requested this time.

Well, better late than never, but finally common sense is beginning to prevail. Thousands of people are fleeing high-tax, heavy-government states for conservative, southern states. They will be coming in droves to Alabama and to Fairhope.
We have to decide through elections and activism what we want our town to look like.

6 th try by RSA. I guess they don’t care about people’s safety just how much they can make off 6 lots. Whose to say they won’t be back and ask for more lots in the next few years.

Greedy RSA for sure

RSA has been destroying our area for years with lots of homes on as much land as they can get their hands on. They are not adding to the beauty of our area, instead adding more overcrowded neighborhoods and traffic which comes with lots of other problems! Enough already!

It is no big deal. Let them do it.

Keep your eyes on the ball, folks. An ultra-low density, six-house, high-end development is not the problem. The high-density "affordable" housing and apartment developments will be our ruin if allowed to proceed unchecked. Utilities infrastructure, schools, and public will all suffer greatly--followed by our way of life.

Stinks!

Juts let it happen. I'm sorry the wealthy nearby neighbors may have to see a few more additional houses near them.

Have y’all seen the apts. going up on Twin Beech? That new roundabout will be buzzing with activity!

Yes, I received a new property tax bill yesterday (or announcement of my new increase to support the schools for all of the apartments). Our politicians are selling us out for their own rewards.
