Gibbens Seeking City Council Spot Again

PLACE FOUR

Howell Gibbens has qualified as a candidate for city council place four, as he did in the 2020 election.

From his campaign announcement:

My name is Howell Gibbens and I am running for Fairhope City Council Place 4. I was born in New Orleans in 1965; my parents met at LSU. We moved to Fairhope in 1978, and into our current house in the Fruit and Nut in 1980. I’ve had a long and successful career as a motion picture sound designer. I rode a R1200GS motorcycle solo from Tokyo to London via Rome, and spent the last few years working as a manual machinist at Marine Exhaust Systems of Alabama on Nichols. As of May 2024, I’ve been a stay-at-home dad. My wife, Olga, works in Mobile doing IT. We attend St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

Five years ago, I ran for City Council because I didn’t like the rate of change in our town. My slogan then was “Let’s Slow Down.” Today the problem is the same and so is my slogan. There are plenty of families like mine in Fairhope who live in modest 800 or 1200 square foot houses. These citizens need a voice. There are also quite a few people here who don’t like having to live in one of the fastest growing cities in Alabama, and who believe “If you’re not growing, you’re dying” is nothing but a worn-out phrase made famous by Tony Robbins. That cliché has no relevance for a small town with a rich history, character and charm. Some say that slowing our growth is hard, and that pushing back against powerful, well funded interests will take enormous will and determination. Our little town is worth such effort.

There is much more to discuss, such as the library brouhaha, the ongoing infrastructure projects, traffic, parking and other quality of life issues, but for me it all starts with slowing down.

Sounds like a good local guy. May get in the runoff.

"Slowing down growth" will never happen here. Here is why: Chamber of Commerce, Realtor Associations, Business Associations all want it, faster the better because it is good for business. They are the kingmakers behind scenes around here.

I am sensing that there may be change in the winds. Even the well-heeled have to drive the roads, go to Drs. and the hospital, put their kids in schools, water their lawns. Money or power will not do any good.
Good luck to these candidates that want to slow down.

Thanks for putting yourself into the competition. I was speaking to a friend about my disappointment in the waterfront project as I saw it for the first time today. Several ladies I don’t know stopped to listen in. I didn’t mind because I want my voice heard. We have all concluded the current City Council needs to be dismantled. The roads are unsafe, the school populations are quickly outgrowing the available resources, and medical facilities have no room for new patients. Additionally, the city crams many attendees within a very limited space at the Tree Lighting Celebration, Mardi Gras parades and Independence Day festivities. It is nearly impossible for any emergency personnel to respond within the packed mobs. Mini “mansions” are overtaking long established neighborhoods with variances given for the dismantling of houses. The foot prints of these houses overtake the entire property with contiguous properties losing privacy and Fairhope charm. The sewerage treatment plant is over loaded with spillage into Mobile Bay. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being pumped under the rights of way and streets instead of establishing a new facility. DO NOT VOTE FOR AN INCUMBENT.

This guy is not my candidate. First, sounds like he’s really never had a real job. “Music Sound Producer” and now stay at home dad while his wife commutes to Mobile. Plus, it appears he has "little house syndrome." So, he lives in a small house and he wants everyone else to live in a small hose. That’s not how America works. We should be able to build whatever we want. Sounds like this guy has a chip on his shoulder, but maybe he should just get a new job and support his wife. And, who really cares if you rode a motorcycle through other countries.
