Volanta Speeds Bumps To Be Removed/Replaced

The city's Street and Traffic Control Committee voted to take out three speed humps installed several years ago on Volanta Avenue west of Section Street and replace them with four more "aggressive" ones that may be more effective.

Residents living there presented a petition requesting the change -- as well as reducing the speed limit from 25 to 20 mph.

Heavy traffic to the Fairhope Yacht Club on the bay at the bottom of the hill is not slowing down much for the ones installed there now, according to the residents. 

The new ones will be the bolt-in rubber ones common on other city streets.

Speed bumps make hauling a trailer a bit more difficult. But that’s okay put in more speed bumps. After all, it’s not like Fairhope is a boating town….oh, wait. Never mind.

Too bad drivers can’t seem to do the right thing anymore, you need physical barriers. If the City were to do traffic studies as they should, the high traffic areas would be identified and they would determine where the speed humps (bolt ons, they’re free to residents) would go. Fact is the worst violators for speed are our neighbors- and many have kids. Funny, huh?

You cannot have it all ways from Sunday. Less chance for ambulance getting to a resident than a child, biker, or pedestrian getting ran over by speeders. We can all do our part by just slowing down- if it were that simple.
