SIDEWALKS CLOSING

Contractors for the owners are setting up scaffolding this weekend around the 100+ year old 301 Fairhope Avenue building in the downtown, in preparation for the start demolition.

A former project architect called the building dangerous.

Mayor Sullivan said recently she expects it to be fully down before the lighting of trees ceremony next month -- when thousands of spectators are usually in town.

No new plans have been formally presented yet, but sources say some type of boutique hotel will likely be proposed again.

An earlier hotel plan never gained the approval of the city's Board of Adjustments, on technical grounds.

Single Tax Corp dropped the ball. Should have restored it instead of the old Summit St. library. Would have made a good art/crafters coop .

Sad to see it go. Anybody notice 80% of the old K-1 school is gone now too.

It has been an eyesore for at least a decade. I am optimistic that, whatever it looks like when the screening is removed, the renovation will be a vast improvement.

Well, at least the tourist will have something special.

The Single Tax philosophy itself does not support preservation. Highest economic use of property is encouraged instead.

The Single Tax philosophy doesn’t exist anymore in Fairhope. Just bare lots in are selling for $500K with no house on them. I’m not sure this is what Henry George envisioned.
